WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU
“The mingling of real life and imaginary life, of present and past, of probability and improbability” - David Campany
Through the blending of images from my parents albums I have explored the affinities and differences between their past lives. The visual empathy of the images enabled me to create imaginary scenarios that not only crossed the line of probability and improbability, but also past and present. I used significant moments in time, age and location as a method to structure the images.
The concept and visual nature of the images challenges the medium of photography within the context of the family album as the archetypal family snapshot is changed by the merging of two separate collections. This union reflects the idea of simultaneity; two separate events happening at the same time and brought together within one frame. Which allows my parents to become illusory yet rational beings within the snapshots of each other’s lives.
I produced a book to accompany the project. This can be viewed here.
